Salt Lake City DJ, Treasures one Of Lennon's Last Autographs

(courtesy of Robert Benson http://www.collectingvinylrecords.blogspot.com/)
Local DJ has held onto record, with one of ex-Beatle's last signatures, for 29 years.

The Salt Lake Tribune

After more than 40 years working in radio, a person is bound to collect lots of memorabilia along the way.

Wooly Waldron, who now works weekend shifts for 103.5 The Arrow, is no exception. Except he tends to lose track, or just plain lose, items that would make most music collectors rabid.

His five original Elvis Presley 45 RPM records pressed on the original Sun label were sold years ago. Waldron also once owned a hen's-tooth-rare radio promotional copy of Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven." Hell if he knows where it is now.

The one collector's item to which he's held tight was one he did not even remember he had, until he rummaged through his old records almost 10 years ago.

"It was one of those finds that just sweeps over you--a 'Wow' kind of thing," Waldron said. "Once I discovered where it was, I knew I wasn't getting rid of it."

Pulling the vinyl LP sleeve from his original copy of John Lennon's 1980 album "Double Fantasy," Waldron saw the ex-Beatle's famous cartoon signature, plus the call letters KCPX, the Salt Lake City dual-band station he worked for in 1980.

The album was mailed to Waldron by record executive friend Bert Keane, who accompanied San Francisco DJ Dave Sholin into Lennon and wife Yoko Ono's New York City home for a Dec. 8 interview. Later that day, and after a Rolling Stone shoot with photographer Annie Leibovitz that preceded Lennon's interview with Sholin, the pop star was murdered by Mark David Chapman.

Waldron opened the signed LP just weeks after Lennon's assassination, recalling that it was meant as a possible promotional item for the station to be given away to some lucky caller. The record evokes memories of that year every time he handles it, Waldron said, especially now that the 29th anniversary of Lennon's death is fast approaching.

"I knew I couldn't do anything with it. Beatles fans were still reeling," Waldron said. "For fans and people in the music business, it was very much like the Kennedy assassination. You knew where you were when you heard the news and remember it today."

So the album stayed stashed away for almost 20 years. Today, Waldron no longer keeps it at home, but stored in a safe at an undisclosed location.

Waldron has shown the signed LP to a select few people, mostly family and radio station colleagues.

"He took it out of his satchel briefcase one day and I damned near passed out," said Sue Kelley, program director at 103.5 The Arrow. "It's a museum piece."

Waldron said he still has no definitive plans for the record, except to hold onto it until he does. "Maybe I'll donate it to charity for an auction," he said. "After all these years, I'm still thinking of promotion."

'Double Fantasy'

"Double Fantasy" is the comeback album by John Lennon and Yoko Ono, released just three weeks before Lennon's death on Dec. 8, 1980. In the aftermath of the murder of Lennon, who was mourned worldwide, the work won the 1981 Grammy Award for Album of the Year. A copy of "Double Fantasy" signed by Lennon for Mark David Chapman, his murderer, who was later sentenced to life in prison, sold in 2003 for $525,000 -- the most valuable single record in history.

Katherine Heigl

I remember saying to myself after watching Under Siege 2: Dark Territory, that that little girl is gonna be a heartbreaker when she grows up..... Yup! After watching things like Knocked up and 27 Dresses, I'd watch Katherine Heigl read a Los Angeles phone book and hang on her every word. Here's why:

Authorities decry assault on 12-year-old red-haired California boy as a result of "Kick A Ginger Day" internet posting, but add that if anyone wants to punch David Caruso, that would be ok

(courtesy of the Chicago Sun Times)

CALABASAS, Calif. -- Authorities say a 12-year-old boy assaulted by a group of middle school classmates in Southern California may have been targeted after an Internet posting urged students to beat up redheads.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Lt. Richard Erickson says the boy, who is redheaded, was kicked and hit in two incidents Friday at his school. As many as 14 students participated in the attacks.

Erickson says the attackers may have been motivated by a Facebook message announcing that Friday was "Kick a Ginger Day." The posting may have been inspired by an episode of the television show "South Park."

The boy was not seriously hurt. AP

Not sure I see the problem here.....

....didn't everybody's grandparents play with the grand kids?

An Austin man faces criminal charges for allegedly driving around his yard drunk while his 7-year-old grandson hung onto the roof.

Robert Wayne Christgau, 56, was charged Friday with driving while intoxicated, child neglect and child endangerment — all gross misdemeanors.

He is scheduled for arraignment Dec. 3.

According to a criminal complaint, Mower County deputies were dispatched to Christgau’s 1606 10th Drive SE residence on Thursday evening.

A witness had seen Christgau driving circles around the yard with the boy holding onto the Ford Escort’s luggage rack, his feet dangling over the windshield. Christgau took out a porch step, at which point the witness ran over and confronted him, the complaint states.

When deputies spoke with Christgau, he had watery, bloodshot eyes and smelled strongly of alcohol. He admitted that he drove with his grandson on the roof and that he had been drinking beforehand.

Christgau also admitted to having an open can of beer in the vehicle during the incident, the complaint states. He was taken to the Law Enforcement Center, where he registered a 0.14 blood-alcohol level — nearly twice the legal limit — roughly an hour after the incident. Authorities also spoke with the 7-year-old boy, who, along with his 3-year-old brother, was being watched by Christgau for a parent. The 3-year-old was left inside the residence unattended during the incident, the complaint alleges.

Christgau is in Mower County custody on $12,000 bail, or $1,000 with court conditions.

Southern grandparents are the best! I should know!

EXTRA! EXTRA! Woman fingers man snapping pubics at Publix

(courtesy of Tampa Bay Online)

ST. PETERSBURG - A 53-year-old St. Petersburg man was arrested over the weekend on charges he was trying to videotape up women's skirts at a Publix supermarket with a camera attached to his shoe.

William Wright, of 546 93rd Ave. N., was charged with one count of video voyeurism on Sunday, according to Pinellas County Jail records. He was released from jail on his own recognizance within a couple of hours.

On Saturday, a woman spotted Wright at the Publix at 7999 Dr. Martin Luther King St. N., according to St. Petersburg police spokesman George Kajtsa.

The woman had seen Wright a month ago at the same Publix – and some months before that, at a Wal-Mart department store – and on both occasions she suspected he was videotaping up women's skirts, said St. Petersburg police spokesman George Kajtsa.

At Wal-Mart, she lost sight of him before she could contact authorities, Kajtsa said. At the Publix a month ago, she went to contact the manager, but Wright had left the store by the time the manager was summonsed, Kajtsa said.

On Saturday, when the same woman saw Wright, she told an employee to get the manager as quickly as possible, and police were also called, Kajtsa said.

She and the manager then watched Wright, and saw him looking for women wearing skirts, Kajtsa said. They saw him edge up to the women, and follow them until they got into a check-out line to pay, the spokesman said. He slid his foot closer to them when he got into their general proximity.

A police officer confronted Wright and asked to speak to him in an office at Publix, Kajtsa said. Authorities found computer flash drives in his pocket, along with a trigger device, and two wires protruding from his pocket, Kajtsa said. The body of the camera was in Wright's pants, and the lens was apparently attached to one of Wright's shoes, Kajtsa said.

Will you still eat what he vows not to?

Food safety lawyer chooses what he WILL NOT eat...EVER!

So what won't you eat if you spend your days focused on horrific food-poisoning cases?

Turns out William Marler's "Do Not Eat" list is short and sweet.

• No raw oysters or raw fish.
• No sprouts. "It's like a petri dish," Marler said of the way they're grown.
• No bagged leafy greens. The greens from dozens of fields are mixed together, so there's more chance of contamination. It's better to buy whole heads of lettuce.
• No hot dogs.
• No unpasteurized juice or milk.
• And no hamburgers. "My growth industry lately has been frozen, preform patties," he said. Scrap meat from thousands of cows gets mixed together at processing plants, so there's no telling what you're getting. If you don't cook them all the way through — which most people don't — any bacteria might survive.

As for the organic craze, Marler isn't convinced the food is safer. Some in the organic community, in fact, are fighting food-safety legislation under consideration in Congress because they think the regulations unfairly burden small farmers.

"The local and organic people need to pay more attention to food safety," he said. "They say if you can look a farmer in the eye, he won't poison you. I say bull."

Sass Jordan!

She is a favorite of mine in the ladies of rock category. If you haven't heard of her, you are missing out on one the great rock voices ever to be recorded. I first heard Sass while playing her single "Make You A Believer"
and "You Don't Have To Remind Me"
in 1992-93 from her album RACINE, on the radio. She followed that with 1994's RATS, with "High Road Easy"....
If you were listening to rock radio in the early 90's, you no doubtedly heard Sass Jordan! I will hopefully find a copy of her latest album, FROM DUSK 'TILL DAWN to review and sample for you here. I've not found it at any of the music retailers here (because they all suck) so I will have to go to the source. I hope she can help me out! Marilyn Monroe

I have just recently become a huge fan of the late MM. It wasn't until recently that I was struck by her pristine beauty.

Here is MM early on in her career. Quite possibly still Norma Jean at this point.

I love the movie "The Seven Year Itch". Really is a great flick, and MM plays the bombshell exactly as she should. After seeing the MM biography on the Biography channel, I became even more sad that she left us so early. She really was a troubled soul as far back as her childhood. Very sad.
This is one of my favorite photos of MM. Just a touch of innocence. Fresh, young, powerful! And she knew it!

SPECIAL EDITION ABBEY ROAD!

Shops to sell 5,000 copies of Beatles album

U.S. independent record stores will sell a unique LP boxed-set edition, limited to 5,000 copies, of the Beatles’ “Abbey Road” on Saturday as part of a series of promotions designed to drive foot traffic into stores hard-hit by the boom in digital music sales.

Exclusive 40th-anniversary vinyl edition of the album, licensed and produced by EMI, includes a T-shirt and poster featuring artwork from the collection’s two-sided hit single, “Come Together”/”Something.”

The “Vinyl Saturday” promotion is the latest stunt in the campaign dubbed “Record Store Day” involving 200 indie music retailers across the country.

Former Beatle Paul McCartney said he was happy to support the cause with what is sure to be a collector-coveted edition of “Abbey Road.”

“When I recently played Amoeba (musicstore) in L.A., I realized what fantastic memories such a collection of music bring back when you see it all in one place,” McCartney said in a statement.

ONE-OF-A-KIND BEATLES LPS DISCOVERED

Beatles Sgt. Pepper's (SEAV 11840) on blue swirl vinyl

What’s inside that storage carton in the back corner of your crawl space? Imagine if it was a one-of-a-kind original pressing of a Beatles record. NOW imagine if there were four of them. You don’t have to be a music expert to know that this is a momentous discovery. But Akim Boldireff and Aaron Keele ARE music experts – known as The Record Guys www.therecordguys.com across the world – and they uncovered this singular stash earlier this year. “I knew right away when I saw these that they were special,” says Boldireff.

These items were obtained from a former Capitol Records record-pressing plant employee, who worked for the company from the late 1970s until the mid 1980s. He had access to the music, the machines and the brilliantly coloured vinyl discs. When his shift was over, he’d sometimes experiment, testing techniques of mixing colour and creating patterns. Thankfully, his favourite band was The Beatles, and he took the opportunity to create what are now totally unique in the world of Beatles collectibles.

Beatles ’67-’70 (SEBX 3-11343) on blue swirl vinyl (2nd LP black)

Among the items is a breathtaking electric-blue vinyl disc with The Beatles “Revolver” side A pressed on one side and John Lennon’s solo debut album “Plastic Ono Band” side B on the flipside. Another gem is a pressing of the seminal “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” album done on a stunning blue marble vinyl.

“And,” he adds, “there are no other copies anywhere in the world. These are the only known copies.”

This remarkable collection isn’t just rare – it's so exceptional the experts hesitate to even place a monetary value on it. You can also view the collection and read about it on Boldireff and Keele’s website, http://www.therecordguys.com. The top items in the one-of-a-kind Beatles rarities collection discovered by The Record Guys:

Side 1 - Beatles Revolver Side A (ST-2576)

Side 2 - Plastic Ono Band Side B (SW-3372)
Blue vinyl
Both sides have ’67-’70 labels
